Broadband and internet

Hi all,

We are having probs with our internet since going wireless. We have up to 8Mb with BT, Dell installed PC including D-Link modem/router which the Dell guy installed hard wired to the machine. Now we have moved the PC into another room and gone wireless.

Here are our (very poor) test results...

The room is in a new build an only a few meters away through two plasterboard walls.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Can you plug the cable back in and run the speedtest again and post the results?

Hi Dave,

I can't at the moment but I did do it not too long ago as we were advised to do so when we phoned BT. I rand a test at Speednet and got just under 4Mb downstream (I think 4Mb is the most we can get) and just under 1Mb upstream.

I've also phoned D-Link who just said ''Upgrade the frimware, if this doesn't work you have a dodgy phone line'' The firmware is now up to date and has solved connection dropout issues we were having but not the speed.

BT have said our line is fine, we've tried new micro filters......

We just don't know what to do now, it's all very complicated and we're basically stuck on 'Dial-Up' speeds but paying for 'Up to 8Mb' Broadband!!

Isn't there some sort of service that we can pay some techy guy to come out and sort it for us because I'm just totally at the end of my tether with it all now! lol

first of all establish whether wireless works fine in the same room.

if it doesnt then try changing the wireless channel to 6, 7 or 8 - reboot the equipment and retry.

how many pc's use wireless? if more than one then we can rule out the wireless network adapters on the pc/s as the problem and suspect the router.

you can change the channel of the wireless on the router and make sure the wireless router is situated somewhere sensible i.e on a cabinet or table or other hard surface - not a carpeted area either as in some cases static can cause wireless distruption and i know its not believable but it can happen

ps. wireless is practically NEVER as good as hard wired so dont expect exact same speeds.

(should still be faster than the 1/2 meg your getting though)

Have you tried the wireless in the same room and discuss results?

You can try changing the wireless channel and frequency on their router, but if that doesn't work you probably need a new router...

You dont say what OS you are running but this can help with xp i see theres a patch for vista but havnt used it on that.

Just download and set the settings for your speed and wireless card reboot and see if that helps.
